The Isle is Full of Noises - The Tempest Puppet Music Show - Wilton’s Music Hall

“As you from crimes would pardoned be, Let your indulgence set me free.”

A fitting end to our diverse summer, this truly amazing puppetry from Berlin based actor Philipp Pleßmann, designer Hank Schmidt in der Beek and musician Nick McCarthy (Franz Ferdinand), brings you a beautiful and haunting creation. With a live musical score songs of which have been used in the last Franz Ferdinand album and reinterpreted by the likes of Steven Merritt of The Magnetic Fields.

On stage, the solo performer brings the characters to life as fantasies, projections and schizophrenic dialogues of an isolated man in the maelstrom of society. Evoking a sense of solitude and remoteness, the man flees into the void of dreams. This space becomes an island where his fantasies come to life. Not a puppet show in the traditional sense, it features no marionettes, rather you can see the puppeteer on stage playing parts and interacting on stage with the puppets.

A score written by Philipp and Nick accompanies the show. The music falls somewhere between ‘70s film musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair and Grease, Simon and Garfunkel and The Flight of the Concords. Nick McCarthy has been playing music with Philipp since he was a teenager. Philipp has gone on to be a renowned puppeteer in Germany. Hank Schmidt in der Beek, a visual artist from Berlin and also a friend of McCarthy's, worked on the stage set for this brilliant piece. Kalma Streun is a young theatre director, who has worked with Philipp and Hank in several pieces in Berlin and Moskau.
